UN vote on Ukraine was a wake-up call for the U.S., said Sikorski in New York

„The U.S. administration should see the recent UN vote on condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as a warning sign,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said after Monday’s General Assembly session.

Speaking to Polish media in New York, Sikorski noted that the United States failed to secure full support from its allies in the vote - a signal, he suggested, that should not be ignored.

"This should be a warning sign for the American administration," Poland’s top diplomat remarked.

Sikorski pointed out that the original U.S.-drafted resolution, which did not explicitly condemn Russia, had to be amended at the request of the European Union before it was ultimately passed.

"The EU-sponsored resolution passed with a convincing majority, and we also managed to adjust the U.S. resolution to reflect the reality of the situation," he stated.

U.S. resolution softened under EU pressure

When asked whether the U.S. was seeking a “reset” with Russia, Sikorski avoided direct speculation, emphasizing that his discussions with American officials did not indicate such a shift.

"I won’t speculate on intentions - I’ll comment on facts if they emerge," he said.

Minister Sikorski also expressed hope that the new U.S. administration would quickly recognize geopolitical realities.

"Every new administration needs some time to rediscover old truths. I hope this happens soon," he observed.

The Polish foreign minister confirmed that Poland had been in close and constant coordination with France and EU leaders to reach a unified stance on the resolution. "We are in ongoing contact, quite literally at all times," he assured.

Poland stands firm on Ukraine

Radosław Sikorski stressed that Poland remains united in its stance on the war in Ukraine, advocating for peace based on truth and justice for the victims of aggression.

"We stand in solidarity with Ukraine, which is fighting heroically. We support peace - but a peace rooted in truth," he affirmed.

He also strongly criticized Russia’s ambassador to the UN for spreading propaganda and reminded the assembly that Ukraine has a longer history of statehood than Russia. "As I have traditionally reminded him, Ukraine has been a UN member for decades longer than the Russian Federation," Sikorski said.
