At the federation’s General Assembly in Warsaw on Saturday, Szmal secured the position with 57 votes, defeating his sole opponent, Damian Drobik, who received 21 votes.
Former Polish handball legend Bogdan Wenta, known for coaching Poland to a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships, withdrew his candidacy shortly before the vote.
Outgoing president Henryk Szczepański chose not to seek re-election.
In his acceptance speech, Szmal highlighted his dedication to promoting both traditional indoor handball and beach handball in Poland, as well as his commitment to expanding women’s handball.
"Women’s handball is just as important to me as the men’s game," Szmal said.
"With the potential we have in women’s teams, I believe we can accomplish great things," he added.
