Composer, music producer Wojciech Trzciński dies at 75

Wojciech Trzciński, an acclaimed composer, arranger, pianist, conductor and music producer, passed away on Saturday, February 1, after a long illness, at the age of 75.

His output includes more than 300 songs, many of which have become hits. He worked closely with such star vocalists as Halina Frąckowiak, Anna Jantar, Irena Jarocka, Krzysztof Krawczyk, Jacek Lech and Zdzisława Sośnicka. He also wrote several musicals, film soundtracks and incidental music for the theatre. 

Born in Warsaw in 1949, Trzciński graduated in guitar from a secondary music school. He then studied geography at Warsaw University. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he was a leading figure in the artistic student movement.

In later decades, he served as the artistic director and producer of the National Song Festival in Opole and of the International Song Festival in Sopot, the artistic director of the Music Theatre in Gdynia, as well as head of music at Polish Radio One. In 1995, he came up with the idea of launching an annual Polish recording industry’s Fryderyk Award.

In 2003, Trzciński founded the Fabryka Trzciny Artistic Centre in the Warsaw district of Praga, a private enterprise focusing on music, the theatre and the visual arts. It functioned until 2016. 

Trzciński’s honours included the Passport Award from the Polityka weekly and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Cultural Merit.
