Warsaw pledges balanced EU response to US tariff hikes

Poland’s prime minister has said that the EU will discuss a balanced and unified response to US tariffs on steel and aluminum, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, in an effort to avoid unnecessary trade wars.

While the European Union stated that it would respond to Trump's decision with “firm and proportionate countermeasures,” Brussels veteran Donald Tusk advocated a diplomatic approach, emphasizing that the bloc should react in a measured way.

“It is worth doing everything possible to avoid unnecessary trade and tariff wars,” said Tusk, whose country currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU.

“This always brings negative consequences for both producers and consumers,” he added.
