The selection completes the first stage of efforts to design the facility, officials said.

Dozens of firms had submitted their proposals for the contest, which was co-organised by PAIH and the Polish Architects’ Association, according to officials.

PAIH said the best proposals came from "ATI - Piotr Trębacz, Wiktor Gago, Łukasz Pałczyński; MFRMGR; architects Alicja Kubicka and Borja Martinez; Nizio Design International' and Medusa Group."

Their design proposals can be viewed here.

Designing the Polish Pavilion

Phase Two of the process will see the development of the final design for the Polish pavilion at Expo 2025, which will be held in Osaka, Japan.

The design will be created in cooperation with construction and architecture experts, as well as "people with knowledge of the Japanese market and the nature of the terrain where Expo 2025 will be situated," PAIH said.

The event is due to be held on an artificial island, which poses an additional challenge for designers, the agency added.

Marcin Graczyk, a senior official at PAIH, said the agency was “delighted” with the results of the competition.

He stated: “Yet again the Polish Architects’ Association has been an invaluable partner and source of support in the highly difficult process of developing the best design for the Polish Expo pavilion.”

Graczyk said architects would "face comparisons" to the award-winning Polish pavilion at the Expo 2020 in Dubai, which he said "will represent another challenge.”

He predicted that “due to the characteristics of the site, the small size of the building lot and the fact that it is located in a seismic zone, which entails numerous limitations, the construction of the Polish pavilion in Osaka will be especially demanding."

But he said he was confident that the facility "will be a fitting venue for Poland at such a significant event.”

'Excellent opportunity to promote' Poland

PAIH said that Poland’s participation in the 2025 World Expo in Osaka would offer “an excellent opportunity to promote the country in a wide-ranging way, with a special focus on developing trade and investment cooperation with Japan."

The aim will be “to strengthen economic and cultural ties between Poland and Japan, as well as other Asian countries; and boost the inflow of foreign investment and tourism from Japan and other Asian countries,” the agency added.

Held under the motto Designing Future Society for Our Lives, the Expo 2025 event in Japan will run from April 13 to October 13, 2025.

A total of 150 countries and 25 international organisations are expected to take part, according to organisers.
